The UK Sponsor Licence List, Explained
The UK sponsor licence list explained: what every column means, what an A rating is, and why being listed does not always mean a company is hiring.
Introduction
The sponsor licence list UK jobseekers rely on is the Home Office Register of Licensed Sponsors — a long, plain spreadsheet that is powerful if you know how to read it, and misleading if you do not. This guide explains each column, how to search it for your sector, and the most common misunderstanding: being on the register does not mean a company is hiring or will sponsor your specific role. Use this page alongside our searchable directory hub, which organises the same official data for job hunting.
Note: This guide explains how to read the register. For the searchable list itself, use our directory hub linked at the end.
What the Register Is — and Where It Comes From
The register is published by the Home Office on GOV.UK as the Register of Licensed Sponsors: Workers, and a separate register for Students.
- It lists every organisation currently licensed to sponsor workers
- It is a point-in-time snapshot — the Home Office replaces it with an updated version on working days
- It contains no vacancies, salaries, contact emails, or application links
Think of it as a permission list, not a job board.
The Columns Explained
| Column | What It Shows | Why It Matters to You | |--------|---------------|-----------------------| | Organisation Name | Legal name of the licence holder | Must match your employer's legal name and your CoS | | Town/City | Main location on the licence | Helps distinguish similarly named companies; large employers may work UK-wide despite one listed town | | County | County of that location | Useful for regional filtering | | Tier & Rating (older format) / Route & Rating | e.g. Worker (A rating) | See below — the most important columns | | Sub Tier / Route detail | Specific route, e.g. Skilled Worker | Confirms the exact route you need is covered |
Route: Which Line Do You Need?
An organisation can appear multiple times — once per route. Look for your route specifically:
- Skilled Worker — under the Worker route, for most professional and skilled roles
- Health and Care Worker — falls under the Worker route for eligible health employers
- Global Business Mobility routes — for intra-company transfers
- Temporary Worker routes — including Seasonal Worker, which is held by scheme operators, not individual farms
Being listed for one route gives no rights under another.
Rating: A vs B
- A rating: Fully trusted sponsor. Can assign Certificates of Sponsorship and sponsor new hires, subject to route rules.
- B rating: Sponsor has compliance issues and an action plan. Restrictions apply, including on sponsoring new workers from overseas, until A-rating is restored.
Always read name + route + rating together as one check.
Why the Register Changes Every Day
Licences change constantly because:
- New employers are granted licences
- Licences expire and are not renewed
- Licences are suspended during Home Office compliance action
- Licences are revoked — the organisation is removed and its sponsored workers are affected
That daily churn is why you should:
- Download / check the latest version, not a saved copy from a forum
- Re-check your sponsor shortly before your visa application is submitted
Why Being on the Register Does NOT Mean "Currently Hiring"
This is the biggest misreading of the list:
- Some licensed sponsors sponsor only a handful of existing staff or transfers
- Some have not recruited externally for years but keep the licence active
- A licence says nothing about whether a current vacancy is eligible or meets the salary rules
What this means: Use the register to build a target list of employers who could sponsor you — then check their actual careers pages for live, eligible vacancies. Our jobs hub does that vacancy layer; the register alone cannot.
How to Use the List for a Smarter Job Search
- Filter by your sector keywords in the organisation name and by town/city for your preferred area
- Keep only Worker route, A-rated entries
- Cross-check each employer's careers page for current roles matching your occupation code
- Verify salary in the advert against the current thresholds before applying
- Re-verify the entry before accepting any offer
FAQs
Can I download the sponsor list? Yes — the Home Office publishes it as a downloadable file on GOV.UK, updated on working days The register is published as a downloadable CSV file on the GOV.UK publication page and is updated on working days.. Our directory hub presents the same data in searchable form.
A company has disappeared from the list. What happened? Possibilities include expiry, surrender, suspension, or revocation. If it is your sponsor, contact them immediately and check any Home Office communication you received — your visa position may be affected.
Does the town on the register limit where I can work? Not necessarily. It shows the licence holder's main location. Your actual work location is stated on your CoS — that is what must match your job.
